She's here, she's queer, she's Batwoman!

As you can see above, there is a new superhero in town, and her name is Batwoman. She is a new addition to the Bat-family, and although she is kicking around Gotham, she has no formal ties to Batman. She is also a lesbian.

In a move that has surprised some, and angered others, DC Comics has opted to make Batwoman one of the most high profile gay comic characters ever. Some applaud the move, while others feel she is merely playing into the 'lipstick lesbian' stereotype. I'm sure most testosterone fuelled fanboys do not care about the politics involved.

The announcment intially appeared in The New York Times. The costume was designed by Alex Ross, and was inspired by both the classic Batgirl costume, as well as the now defunct Batman Beyond television cartoon.

Sounds pointless and stupid.

Even if it is a good money maker, which is probably the only reason they made it, it still detracts from the Batman name.

I don't mean that because of the lesbian thing, excluding the money making prospect, I mean because Robin and Batgirl already existed and they should really be focusing on trying to make those into good comics (or continue to make them so), before making another new IP. Especially one that's not even original.

I believe that there was a Batwoman in the past, but yes, this is likely a grab at the green. But in a way it is also a necessity, since Batgirl is currently out of the picture, and her book has been cancelled.
