CBC, Sexy Lit, and Formal Video

I don't know who these people are, but I think they are trying too hard

Ba-Zing! Post #90 has arrived!

Hey gang (and new readers)! I did an interview with the CBC today, regarding the Israeli elections. They came to U of T's Hillel to hear student perspectives and record the election 'party' in the Hillel lounge. I got some calls later telling me that I was spotted on national TV tonight, but I missed it. If you saw me blabbering about Olmert, uniliateral border definition, and taking a hard line against terrorists, congratulations.

I had a class on sexuality in Yiddish literature today. I didn't know Isaac Bashevis Singer was so spicy. Still nowhere near as dirty as my Chaucer poetry though. I never knew medieval poetry could be so... er... like that. *Shudder*

Speaking of spicy, have you kids seen the music vid from
Hillel's formal? Well, here it is:

Great Moe-ments

As hyped in the previous post, here is Great Moe-ments.

Also, here's the description YouTube users see when they find it: "This video is made up of two halves. The second is a loving tribute to a dear friend who will be leaving his home for a year in Japan. The first half is the wacky video that was made in 2 hours which chronicles the making of the second half. Get it? It's funny, has music, and lots of Moe. Enjoy."

A Weird Start to My Day / Moe's Shindig

(Dr. Love blesses Moshe before he begins his journey. Click to enlarge)

OK, now I know this day is going to be weird. I was popping out of the St. George Subway at 11 AM today, ready to strut towards my literature class (Fiction 1900-1960), when some random guy comes up to me and says "You've got a sense of humour, huh?" I ignored him and kept walking. Then he called after me.

"You've got to. You're Jewish."

Weird, I know. In hindsight (20/20!), I should have turned and said, "I need a sense of humour to deal with schmucks like you!". Oh well.

I'm sitting in my class right now, letting the Faulkner lecture wash over me. I don't think it's on the exam.

Segue, segue, segue.

Moe's goodbye shindig was awesome last night. We all sang "Sayonara to you" around a cake, ate some great sushi (store-bought, and Tamara-made), and watched the new Shul of Rock epic, Great Moe-ments. It is unofficially known as Good Memories 2.5, since it comes between 2 and the upcoming 3, and fits the format quite nicely. We also watched both Good Memories flicks, as well as some other fun clips of past mayhem. (For those that have yet to see the Good Memories flicks, they will be posted here when the third film in the trilogy is released.)

It was really great seeing everyone that was there, and I'm really glad we got to contribute to Moe's big send-off. I have been informed that he will be taking a camera to Japan that has a video feature. Expect some international video collaborations in the near future.

Have an amazing time in Japan (and briefly Israel), Moe! I'll see you in '07.

Twelve US Jews Killed in Chile

*Updated
It is with great regret that I inform you of the deaths of 12 Jewish Americans. The Bnai Brith trip was in Chile when their tour bus (pictured here) plummeted into a canyon after swerving to avoid a truck.

According to JTA, "The victims were returning to their Celebrity Cruises ship after visiting Lauca National Park".

The cruise line has sent a rabbi to Chile to assist passengers and the families of the victims. Family members of guests on the cruise are urged to call 1-888-829-4050.

*CNN released a new article with a lot more information. It is available here.

Jewish Girls Gone Wild

Some Jewish girls are sweet role models that are the pride of their community. Placed on a pedestal, these beacons of virtue represent the values and traditions of thousands of years of Judaism. The girls in this video are not those girls.

Before you get all buggy-eyed and start posting in the comments box that Shul of Rock has transformed into a smut farm, please be advised that this is a Purim comedy video! It is an ad for Makor's Shushan Channel party in New York City this month. It is totally PG, and totally hilarious. My fave line? Guy: Who's yo' daddy? Girl: He's an orthodontist.

Natalie Portman/Monkeys/Sisters/Purim

Natalie Portman made an appearance at ShoWest to receive her award as Female Star of the Year. She was delighted to find that the local Coca-Cola monkey had the same hair-do as her! More pics of monkey and Natalie at Egotastic.com .

Also, I want to congratuate my sister on receiving her first acceptance letter from a university today! You're really growing up, kid.

Speaking of my sister, did you know that she has her own blog? Well she does. Her latest post features photos from the Purim / Birthday bash of Ms. Vardit Lightstone, Joey's oldest sister. Check it out. The Marilyn Monroe / Marilyn Manson pic is bloody hilarious!

Sayonara, Moe

IMG_7479

Moe is having a goodbye shindig before he flys off to Japan for a year. It is on March 26th, in his home. Here is what Moe has to say about it:

"I'm have a going away shindig next Sunday, on the 26th, you all better come, or else, WHAP....whatever that means."

Oy, I'm gonna miss him!

Jane love Vaughan, Vaughan love Jane

Hiya gang! I've spoiled you with videos lately, eh? Well now I'm going to treat you to something else... An interesting factoid.

I was just flipping through the site of Mr. Brian K. Vaughan. He's the highly acclaimed writer of ongoing series such as Y: The Last Man, Runaways, and Ex Machina. Well, Jane Magazine, (yes, I said Jane!) has just listed his comic Ex Machina in their "Stuff We Love this Month" column.

As quoted on BKV.tv, Jane says (heh) "Finally, something for us hybrid comic-book/political geeks. Every month, Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris get better on 'Ex Machina,' their series about a superhero who becomes mayor of New York."

Well, there you have it folks. Comics have invaded women's magazines. What's next? Wonder-Woman on the cover of Cosmo? When Joss Whedon's film adaptation comes out, I wouldn't be surprised. Personally, I want to see Supergirl do a Vogue spread. Everyone knows capes are the must-have item this spring!

Read the first issue of Ex Machina for free! (7 mb)

Purim 2006

IMG_8417

Hello S of R readers. For our 81st post (we're almost at the triple digit mark!) we've got some pictures (and a video!) from this year's Purim celebrations. According to Judaism 101, Purim is "one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination".

Enjoy the pics, and once you scroll to the bottom, enjoy the video clip. Thank you to Reggie and the Full Effect for providing the song, "Laura's Australian Dance Party". I'm too hungover to provide captions, so enjoy the non-captioned photography. And remember: Haman sucks!

Movie Watch: Film Geek

Written and directed by James Westby, Film Geek stars Melik Malkasian as Scotty Pelk, the biggest film geek of all time. Scotty loves movies so much that it is plain ridiculous, and after getting fired from his job as a video store clerk, he is forced to face the real world. That includes women.

The film was selected as part of the 2004 Independent Film Project in New York City.
Is it the next Napoleon Dynamite, or a dismal failure? You decide.

See the trailer here.

Shul of Rock Theatre

Welcome back to the Shul of Rock Theatre. I'd like to thank YouTube for providing the webspace. I also wish to thank the Shul of Rock Players. This time around, the cast includes Noam, Moe, Mr. T, Benzi, and myself.

Our previous installment featured Fort Adventures and Descent into Chaos. Due to the overwhelming popularity of Descent into Chaos, we have commissioned a sequel, aptly titled 'More Chaos'. It features the entire 'Chaos' cast in another spinning camera situation. This time, rather than acting as their own weird selves, the troupe have each adopted distinct character traits. Can you guess who is playing what? Highlight here for the answers: In order of appearance: Archie Comics Freak, Paranoid Man, Mood Swing McGee, Noam Gone Wild, and an easily excitable girl. Well, there you have it folks! Enjoy this incredible episode of Shul of Rock Theatre.

Screening next: Avi's Rescue Adventure Bonanza!
Don't touch that dial!

Hung up on Soul

Party Ben has done it again! This time around, PB has combined Death Cab for Cutie's "When Soul Meets Body" (great song!) with some beats and vocals from Madonna's "Hung Up". What we wind up with is an incredibly catchy and fun song that will stay in your head for a few weeks, putting a little bounce into your step in the process. Listen to the mp3 here.

If you are in the mood for more mashes, click here to listen to Party Ben's Coldplay/Kraftwerk song.

Ever wonder about what happens when Snoop Dogg is mixed with Led Zepp? Click here to find out.

And if you are new to Party Ben's mashes, or just mashes in general, listen to the Green Day/Oasis/+more mix here to get a feel for the genre. This is what it's all about.

Stop reading this post! You've got music to listen to!

The F Word

That's right ladies and gents, it is time for Hillel of Greater Toronto's first annual formal. According to About.com, formal attire is defined as this: "Formal usually means the same as Black Tie, but in some trendier cities like New York or Los Angeles, it could mean a black shirt, no tie with a tux. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates."
In that case, what is the accepted definition of 'black tie'? The site defines it as such: "Black Tie means formal. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates."
I'm not planning on renting a tux... I think a black tie and white shirt on a black suit should do the trick. As for a vest.... well, maybe next time.

Wanna come to the event? Don't worry if you don't have a date - it will likely be a great place to meet adventurous members of the opposite sex (or should I be saying 'desired sex'? How politically correct!) that are on the prowl. And if you do have a date? Well, then you better start mentally preparing yourself now for the inevitable moment when Noam grabs her for a waltz and you are left on the sideline with nothing but an overly sweet Shirley Temple.

What a gas!

Want to find the cheapest price for gasoline in Toronto? If so, Toronto Gas Prices is a really handy site.

Man, gas prices are really high, eh? You'd have to be crazy to regularly drive a car in T.O. when we have such a state of the art transit system. With a student discount, you can get unlimited travel for a month for $87. Not too shabby!

Natalie Gone Wild

*video fixed

Hey kids! Wanna see Natalie Portman rappin'? When sitting down for an interview, Natalie lays down some mad rhymes, and shows the world what a bad-ass she really is. Forget what you know about Miss Portman. When you see this vid, you'll know something else.

From last night's SNL:

Oh, and if you want to see Natalie get down at a Bar-Mitzvah with SNL's Andy Samberg, see this pic.
